York County wildlife control Tip of the Month:

HOW TO KEEP WILD ANIMALS OUT FROM A SHED OR PORCH
When wild animals move into a home, they mostly hole up in above-ground areas like wall cavities, attics, and chimneys. But in some situations, they take refuge in places like the shed or porch. Areas like these are usually very small, and the entry points of the wild animals can be hidden. However, if you feel that wild animals may be living below these spaces, you must act quickly to get rid of them. There are so many signs that indicate the presence of wild animals in your shed or porch, including scratching, droppings, and scavenged food lying around the entry holes.

Why Do Wild Animals Stay in Sheds and Porches?
Wild animals love to stay in dark hidden places, where they can raise their young ones safely and avoid contact with humans. Naturally, most animals that live in the wild take refuge in caves and spaces between tree roots and burrow their own holes. Therefore, when these critters find their way into your shed or porch, they make it their new habitat because it looks just like their home in the wild. Additionally, the availability of food sources like your trash can or domestic pet food can make them stay.

What Kind of Wild Animals Live in Porches and Sheds?
Different kinds of wild animals live in these cavities and most of them are nocturnal in nature. This means you'll have to keep watch every sunset, so you catch the animal entering or leaving. If that strategy turns out to be ineffective, carefully inspect the area to see if you can locate their entry hole. Usually, the size of the hole will give you an idea of the kind of animal you’re dealing with. It is also important to confirm if it is the nesting season. This is because bigger species of wild animals breed during the spring season. So, if you discover that you have a wildlife problem between March and July, bear in mind that there may be baby wild animals in the hole too.

Trapping and Removing the Animals
The best way to evict wild animals from a shed or porch is through trapping. Tiny rodents like mice and rodents can be caught with traditional snap traps baited with fruits or fish. You need to use a cage trap when trapping bigger species like groundhogs, woodchucks, and raccoons. Make sure you position the cage trap in a conspicuous location close to the entry or exit point. Most traditional trappers use lethal traps and glue traps that hold the animal to the pad till it dies. While these kinds of traps may solve the problem, they are quite hazardous and will pose a health risk to children and pets. Additionally, it’s unfair to treat animals cruelly.

If there are young animals in the cavity, you must apply caution. Wait for their mother to leave the shed or porch, then carefully grab them and place them in a cage trap. When the mother returns, she will naturally move towards her babies and will want to be reunited with them. This way, you can trap the whole family and evict them safely.

The trapping will be much easier if you’re dealing with a single animal. All you need to do is place the trap strategically around the entry holes and use attractive bait. Some animals are wary of traps and will do anything to avoid one. If you’re faced with a situation like this, you can place food in a specific location over several nights to lower the animal's guard. Then when the animal gets used to finding food in that location, you place the food in a trap.
